The Box

Last week as I was teaching, the subject of " thinking outside the box " came up . Funny as what we where learning was " thinking about the box" and learning to make one. But anyway as we talked everyone began to add their own twist to the phrase  like .... "I need a ladder to get out of the box" ... "What is a box?? " ..... etc. I thought it would be fun for everyone who stops by to try  and leave a comment as to what their personal version is to this phrase ..... or what it means to them.  Go for it !!!!

Our keepsakes and memorabilia need to be kept in a box but our todays and tomorrows need to break out of any box!

The Armful by Robert Frost

For every parcel I stoop down to seize
I lose some other off
my arms and knees,
And the whole pile is slipping, bottles, buns,
Extremes too hard to comprehend at once
Yet nothing I should care to leave
behind.
With all I have to hold with hand and mind
And heart, if need be,
I will do my best
To keep their building balanced at my breast.
I crouch down to prevent them as they fall;
Then sit down in the middle of them all.
I had to drop the armful in the road
And try to stack them in a better load.

The artist is always outside the box....we are different thinkers, maybe because we are right brainers and a box is square :)

I had this amazing art teacher in college who used to tell me to let myself out of the box. She saw something in me that I didn't see in myself at the time. It was just a basic art class - one of the general ed requirements - but I truly believe that she changed my life.

So my version... There is a whole, beautiful artistic world just waiting to be explored outside of that dang box!

Sometimes I need to find the box. I have an idea but it just isn't coming out right....in this case finding the box would be nice....LOL. :0)

Personally, I think the box gets a bad wrap. Lots of imagination and creativity has stemmed from a box. I mean, how else would you have built that great fort when you were a kid? Sometimes, it's fun to be inside the box, as long as it is YOUR box!

Living and doing outside the box are 2 different concepts. If you live your life outside the box, you're doing, but many just do outside the box and not that often. Personally, I try to live my life outside the box and from what I've been told, I'm successful at it!! hahahaha!!

The other day I spoke to this homeless woman in the grocery store. She obviously was having a conversation with one of her voice buddies, but she then asked it a question, I had to answer it since I knew her invisible friend was unable to give her the right information. She turned around and said, "Oh thanks, none of my friends knew where to find it." My daughter advised me not to speak to those people since they could be dangerous, which is a possibility she needed to know where she could get cheaper bananas and I told her where!! I was just being polite, but my daughter told me I was being downright crazy!! I do thing like that all the time. I suppose I'm a bit crazy, but quite happy!

I love all the answers but especially the one by Jo James. Georgina, we'd get along fine - I've been called crazy many times LOL

I'd like to decorate the box so wonderfully that people would come close to look and I could jump out everyday and yell "Surprise!" and shower them with creativity.

I have always felt safe in the box- it is only now at the age of 50 that I feel brave to peek outside and discover a whole new creative world.

A year since I met you cute Julie at Art Nest- so glad I did- you are the queen of creative :)

PS. I missed the last step on my stairs, rolled my foot. 10 days later it hurts enough I decide to go to the doctor and discover I broke my foot!

Oh, for me, the box changes. It's when the lid is closed and we can't peek out at the world beyond that I think we limit our potential to grow. If the lid is open and/or we can tip it over to get out and take some field trips, gain different perspectives and collect experiences, I think it's okay to return and enjoy one's space and decorate the inside with those experiences. The box is the launching point, the vessel that is intended to go somewhere.

Hey, Julie, just wanted to tell you thank you for the really nice long comment recently. I'm home and doing okay. It's been a tough experience but part of my journey, I guess. Hope you are doing okay with the changes you are making with those around you - I read your post about that the other day but haven't checked back. Just know I am thinking of you.

The picture of the box took me back to the time when my children were small. On a cold snowy winter day a box became a car - a boat - a cave - a castle.... it was whatever your imagination allowed it to be... thanks for sparky those memories... Barb
