Dear blogger friends I need your advice ???

SO here is the big question?? How many of you would move back  to your home town if you left when you where 18 and where now 52?? Cal and I are thinking  of doing just that?!  My Mom has  a beautiful home in a small town called Allegan in Michigan . It was the last house  my father built 30 years ago. This is the reason  she will never sell the place. It has 2 bedrooms  2 baths . The home features tongue and grove  wood ceilings and pegged wood  floors ,pine kitchen cabinets with custom stained glass window inserts that  I designed   . It heats with a wood stove and back up  furnace and has a  well with wonderful water . It sits on a wooded lot high on a bluff  overlooking a  river and a  wooden bridge . The town is small about 4500  and is 30 minutes from lake  michigan . A large river meanders back and forth  through the town with many bridges  . The home has a huge 3 car   garage as well as a large pole  barn featuring  a bath room , all  with a large paved driveway  and parking  . Cal and I would open a pretty  antique store and also sell cool  hand made goods . HINT HINT I would love to feature many of  my  blog land friends work in the shop !!! Such as wearable art,( Deb Hodge this mean You!)  jewelry,( Sharon???) hand made beads( Denise ??) and art work So many of you are so talented I have not the room in this post  to list you !!!But you come to mind. I would  also teach art classes and bring guest  instructors in  for weekend retreats . All could stay in town at   the Fabulous  Delano  Band B !! .We would have a small organic garden and chickens( black  and white ones of course, Cal said no to pigmy goats ) . Cal is going to take upholstery lessons so he can help restore our  finds . I hope he likes working with  Belgium linen , natural duck cloth,   and my beloved black  and ivory check . Oh how I   love Ballard  design  and the new Restoration hardware line!!!I have always wanted to do    hand painted furniture  in the Tracy  Porter and  Mackenzie Child style  !!!  We would open  for spring, summer and fall  on weekends only  and could also  have a  cute tea/ coffee house on the site . Many people come up from Chicago( 2 hours drive or ride amtrak) to Allegan for antiquing as it has one of the best
antiquing markets held  once a month at the county  fair grounds and the town is sweet as can be in a northern small town way , close to many  beautiful lakes as well as lake  Michigan and wonderful Saugatuck Mich.  a super tiny resort town..  The  only thing  is THE COLD SNOWY WINTERS and my  past growing up issues.... I could not wait to leave!!! And would my Mom give her  OK to this idea, she is thinking  on it now .  She has not lived there   in 15 years  but has  had a caretakers / tenants   living in the place for the last few years  they would have to move out  and I feel bad about that as thay are  family friends .  I would love the feedback and yes I know this is   a very  bad time to do this in a recession and in MICHIGAN one of the hardest hit areas economic  wise in the country!!!!!! But on the other hand the building  and home  site set up for this is already in place, perfect and  just ready   to stage  and  it is a very inexpensive place to live  .Please tell me your thoughts,  are we CRAZY??? Nothing  ventured nothing gained ?!

A baby painted turtle from an Allegan Lake . My mom tells  a story about me as a little girl.  After I had found a turtle ,I was  told  to give it to my friend .I said no to this with the response that " you can always have a friend  but not a  turtle" . How do you spell Brat ??? J-U- L-I-E

Well. This is my opinion:
It sounds like you would be living my dream! If it's that close to Chicago AND has a monthly Antique Market, it sounds like the ideal spot. I wish I could do it!
And about the weather, Hey, It's cold everywhere right now! I'm only 2 1/2 hours from Chicago and it sounds like a great weekend getaway spot. A lot of people moved away from my hometown and now a lot of them are back. I think that they missed the "small-town" feel. Good Luck! It sounds exciting! :) - Cindi

Dear Julie,

If you don't do it, you'll always wonder if it would of been the best decision you'd ever made.
You could make a list, pros and cons and see which one is longer!

I agree with Julie's suggestion of a list, but my instinct is to say "what are you waiting for" the growing up issues are just that, youre grown up now! And as someone in her late 70s I know how necessary it is to be bold and live the dream, I do every day!!!If I get to visit the US again, I will bring all my friends, now theres a thought to scare you, Sheila

DO IT! Michigan is lovely, full of arty folks, and it seems that the house is calling your name (s).
Yes, it's cold there in the winter, but then you can stay inside and do your art!
I say YES! And if I'm ever in Michigan again, I will come over for a cuppa!

Hugs,

Julie,
Go for it! I think this is a wonderful opportunity. I miss my home town and the comfort of the people I made memories with. I would jump at the chance to go home if the conditions were right. Yours sound right~

What an exciting venture...I wish you both the best! I thought of the weather,I'm from Maine and her in NC it is really cold this winter. My husband keeps saying, "feels like we are in Maine"!
I'm so excited for YOU!!! xXx

First, thank you for following my blog. I feel honored as your art inspires me.

Second, I have been to Allegan, Michigan and it is a LOVELY little town.... the ice cream shop on the lake is a fond memory. And all those lovely old houses!

We have dear friends in Paw Paw. In fact we love Michigan for all the fresh fruits and veggies, the big lake, the small lakes, the antiques, the festivals, on and on...

We recently moved back to the Tulsa, Oklahoma area (home for both of us). I had not lived here since I was 18 and that was over 40 + years ago. Quite a change for me.... the hubby moved to Indiana when we married a few years back. Anyhow, this is an adventure for me. So it could be a grand adventure for you too. And as "oldblackcatboo" said you are close to Chicago and other venues.

So what ever your decision winds up to be.... think positive and enjoy yourself and continue creating.

PS: I think this opportunity is "meant to be." :)

Sounds like you have put a lot of thought into it. Sounds like dreamy plans! Only you can know if you will be settled and fine over your past issues. If so, I say "Go for it!!!!".

Oh Julie Dear-- I see in Capital letters "Cold Snowy Winters"
Yes, they will be.
Also, I'm guessing here, you probably have good friends where you are, nice restaurants, shopping, a lot of conveniences - will you have that there?
Moving, setting up shop, buying & restoring pieces- is a lot of hard work.
Think long & hard, pray for wisdom in your decision.
What ever you decide, I wish you Fantastic Success!

It sounds as though your "inner voice" is speaking and that you're listening! Julie, if (for some reason or another) it doesn't work out, you can always formulate plan "B"!!! God opens closes a door and opens a window. This just may be your window of opportunity!!!! Blessings on your decisions!!! Hugs, Terri xoxo

Waahhh!! We'll miss you in AZ, but my gosh you make it sound like a fantasy. It does kind of sound like you have your heart made up already, you just need the validation ... which it sure sounds like you're getting ... of course all these people from michigan want you close to them!! God speaks to us in funny ways sometimes ... wishing you all the best ... and we will miss you being close to us!!

I would do it! I live withing driving distance of Allegan -- they have a wonderful fiber festival at the fairgrounds in August that I go to because I'm a handweaver. I also go to the antique show whenever I get the chance. And don't forget Crane's Pies. You don't know me at all -- but it would be fun for me to have you close to me -- someone creative who has lots of ideas going through their head that sound totally cool! Yes, they have snow -- lots of snow -- plus the lake effect snow which yesterday that area got around 36 inches of -- a record in one day. But the summers are wonderful and you will be within driving distance to the wonderful towns of Glen Arbor, Petoskey, Charlevoix and Harbor Springs -- my favorites. Keep us posted on what you decide to do.

I live in a rural town in Northern Michigan, all of my children have left and gone to the city. Most of them long to return to their home. Hopefully, they will have the opportunity to do so one day. Now, from a selfish point of view, I would love to have you in Michigan and have the opportunity for a retreat/classes with you. I say, go with your gut, it will work out.

You will bloom where ever you are. We moved back to CO and I have never been happier. Go for girl!!

Jingle said...

Well, that's a tricky one. It sounds like you could really do many things you have dreamed of doing. That would be great. But...you need to be happy where you are. Do you like small town living? I moved back to my hometown, despite growing up issues that got me out of there right after high school, only to find that the charm of small town living wasn't so charming anymore for me! LOL! We have since moved to the city where we are much happier! You just need to know what you will both love. It sounds absolutely lovely!

I think it sounds wonderful Julie....go for it...after all we all want to go home. :0)

What an AMAZING oppportunity - I say go for it! Besides the super-cool house/barn/shop, you also have a chance to go back to your hometown as an adult to use the wisdom and confidence you have under your belt to work through those childhood issues. I had that opportunity last summer in my own life, and the freedom it offers is immeasurable.

I can't wait to hear what you decide to do!

AND invest in some good snow boots and snow coats, gloves and hats!!

Thank you so much for that fabulous class last night at Paper Tales. I feel so energized right now, in a whole new direction! I figured out my finishing touch on my piece, and want you to see it. I will post it on my blog soon. Good luck this weekend, and I so wish I was joining you for another fantastic class.

Hey Julie,
I think you should move to Michigan, (is it) and stay in your mother's house. I think it would be a real opportunity for you and Cal. You could teach workshops in your own home and I can come and take more classes from you! I feel that the flood in Santa Fe was an omen for you to make a change in your life. And you could once again enjoy the seasons.

You mean you haven't packed up and moved yet???? It sounds delightful and a lifestyle that would be so wonderful and full of hard work you loved doing. That's different from hard work you have to do and don't love.
Put it in black and white...sheet of paper, pen and cons on one side, pros on the other and see what shakes out.
When it's all over with, follow your heart. If, over the years, you've been true to your heart, your heart will be true to you.
Visiting from Whimsey, checking out your classes...would you be interested in teaching a class at Thistle Cove Farm?

Hi, Julie
Yes! I definitely would move back to the home...such nostalgic memories of warmth feed my soul thinking back to my own childhood home that I lived in for 20 years.
Parents and what they make their children do...bah! Even my own grandmother spoiled the little girl more who lived in a rental house they owned. My grandmother was a brat one time when she had an adorable pair of red mittens and a red knitted store bought hat. I was at her house with Judy, the little girl who was exactly my age, and my grandmother looked at both of us and she was standing there holding the red hat and mittens and she gave Judy the hat with little tassels on it and me the gloves! I was her GRANDDAUGHTER for crying out loud! She should have given them both to ME! So you see, all children 'feel this way' when what they 'think' what 'rightfully belongs to THEM' they should NOT have to give to SOMEONE ELSE! My grandmother did teach me how to knit and crochet and for that I am thankful for, as I did crochet up a storm for years and made money doing it too. So I understand perfectly well how you felt about the turtle. Too much inside turmoil for a child to handle...not fair! not fair!
I'm glad you kept the turtle...hee! hee!

P.S. I've been leaving tons of comments on blogs at 'A Fanciful Bohemian' for the OWOH event. There are tons of bloggers participating this fifth, and final year.

Oh I think you would do really REALLY well there! That area of Michigan seems to be very creative and very open to artistic endeavours! It would be within driving distance from me!!!I would be first in line to your shop!!!

Also, you've had so many rough things happen lately, maybe God is trying to tell you it is time to make a VERY big change. A year ago Mom & I were in your class in Vegas, and had to embrace a HUGE change that financially terrified me with my job situation. But once I lept, I began following the open doors to my heart's desire and everything has improved! Health, Happiness and Stress all much improved! But I had to lose everything before I paid attention to what a blessing this freeing opportunity actually was!

Also, my mom is an awesome Interior Designer who has worked in that area of the country alot, and could give you names of great suppliers for upholstry etc. Pretty close for you to come to some of the biggest fairs and antique markets in the country too!
